So your favorite local band posted a bulletin on myspace.com asking you to help them get on Warped Tour. 'Warped Tour?!' you say. 'That's sOoOoOo cool!' So you decided to set up an account on EIY to help them out. You get on the website, you get your profile set up... and...
You aren't really sure what to do now.
When I first got onto the site, I didn't really know what to do either, but after a while, I figured some things out. So, to help fellow fans who have not yet gotten the hang of EIY, here are the do's and don'ts.
DO: Login everyday to rate your favorite songs rad.
For those of you who haven't figured it out... You do this by going on the band's EIY profile and clicking the little triangle button next to the song. A voting box should appear somewhere. (I have to scroll up to see it.) You can also search the band's username and rate the songs that come up by clicking the little skulls. A voting box will pop up. Hooray.
DON'T: Rate other bands 'sucky' just because they aren't YOUR band.
I see so many bands with terrible to average ratings, even when they're really good. Why? Because some of the assholes out there play dirty by rating anyone who isn't their band 'sucky,' even when they didn't even LISTEN to the song, and even when it deserves a 'rad.' Look, if you aren't going to even give other bands a fair chance, then don't rate them at all. Otherwise, what's the point?
DO: Click the little 'I Support this Band!' button.
This is a nice way to show your support for bands. The button can be found on the band's profile, and when you click it, a link to their profile will appear on your profile. It lets people see who you support, and it helps them with exposure. You have to do this every week though, so don't forget!
DON'T: Think that supporting other bands will hurt.
Personally, I came on EIY to support New Liberty, but when I looked around the site, I discovered other bands I liked as well. (Saturday Nigh Shakedown, Because I Love You, etc. Check them out.) Just because you signed up to EIY for one specific band doesn't mean you can't support other bands on the site as well. There are tons of GREAT bands on this site. Don't be stingy. Support them too.
DO: Write articles.
Do an interview. If you go to a show, write a review. If you listen to a cool album, write a review. If you have other ideas for articles, write them.
DON'T: Write unintelligent articles.
Alright. If you write a review for a band, please make it an intelligent review. Don't just take ten minutes to write it and send it in without proper grammar and correct spelling. Don't just ramble on and on about how great the band is, without having anything to back the claim up. Have some substance and structure in your articles. Its all fine and dandy if you write a bunch of articles to support your band, but if they all suck, what's the point?
DO: Shamelessly advertise your favorite bands.
Talk about your band with other scene supporters. Hype them up. Advertise them on your profile. Mention them in your articles. Anything that you think will help.
DON'T: Do this. Ever.

(post same comment on the EIY God's profiles 10 times in a row.) ...Oh god I think lost a few IQ points as I was typing that out. Look, its fine if you say you like a certain band and you would like them to play Warped Tour, but don't leave tons of spam on everyone's profiles. Its annoying.
DO: All this other stuff.
Add shows/events to your calendar. Make playlists. Listen to EIY Talk Radio on Monday nights. Call in. IM them about your favorite band. Check out other bands on the site. Listen to their music. Comment their profiles. Give the bands some feedback. Talk to them. Make friends. Show support. Have fun.

Bands should band together not battle each other
this article is awesome its true we came here aiming for Warped in the miami area but started fishing around and seeing this site as the best DIY site out there right now. I think this article helps shows the fans that aspect.

Great article! Sarah referred me over from Buzznet and I actually wasn't sure what to do. haha None of my favorite unsigned bands are on this site, so I will just enjoy finding new ones that are. =))
I wasn't directly speaking to anybody. I thought it was just fans who were voting other people down on their own. I'm gonna give all of the bands out there the benefit of the doubt here. I doubt any band is specifically telling their fans to vote people down.
I will admit, when I first came on to EIY, my first instinct was to vote down anyone who wasn't New Liberty. But after a while, I realized that was a really pointless thing to do. I know a few of my other friends who signed up to EIY did this as well. So as far as voting people down, I honestly think fans just do this on their own.
Because Ernst didn't realize I'm a girl.
